SIMPLIFYING MATHEMATICAL CONCEPTS

Maths is knowledge

Mathematics is not as hard as most people perceive it. This misconception has greatly created fear in many learners. Before delving into mathematical concepts wholeheartedly, their minds are already corrupted that the sums they are about to solve are very difficult. If the mind thinks so, definitely everything is going to happen that way. Having the right mindset and attitude is the driving force behind the successful understanding of mathematical concepts. Whatever the mind thinks and believes is what the body works tirelessly to achieve. Mindset is a very powerful tool when it comes to understanding of mathematical concepts. When your mind is already informed that mathematics is very hard, no matter how hard you try to understand any idea, it will not stick to your brain.

Mathematical concepts can be a bit complex. However, the complexity involved in solving sums does not justify that usual misconception. Such branches of mathematics need attention, dedication, practice and time management, to comprehensively tackle them. Taking your precious time solving numerous sums on a given concept results to perfection. When you are practicing time and again, you will know areas that need more attention. You will identify areas that may appear challenging and seek assistance from lecturers and fellow students. The more you practice, the more you will understand what you are learning. Great mathematicians will confirm to you that the best way to learn and understand various mathematical concepts is through continuous practice. Solving a sum and failing to arrive to answer does not mean that you are a perennial failure. It only shows you that a lot of effort needs to be put in place to arrive to the correct answer. It is a way of assessing yourself if you have understood the concept.

However, mathematical concepts such as number theory, differential equations, advanced calculus and advanced algebra, are very challenging to many students. Many learners find them difficult and get discouraged in their studies.

Most of mathematical formulae we use to solve various problems were invented after rigorous practice and tiresome calculations. Those mathematicians experienced several setbacks on their way to invention. They did not get discouraged along the way. Neither did they believe that solving the problem at hand was a nightmare. They were determined to solve the problem no matter the challenges arising from blues. Having the right mindset will make you thrive in mathematics. Here are guidelines that can be used to help in tackling mathematical problems:

  • 1.      Familiarize yourself with the formula used in that concept. Every mathematical concept is solved using a formula. The first step to take before tackling any problem is to identify the formula to be used in the process.
  • 2.      Understand the terms used in the concept in question. This will enable you, to correctly use the formula in solving various problems.
  • 3.      Understand the steps needed to arrive to the answer. Show all the steps you have used to arrive to the answer. An organized answer has all the steps and calculations used in the entire process.
  • 4.      Solve many problems. Solving many problems on a given topic will equip you with all the needed technical skills and expertise. It will sharpen your skills on how to tackle various concepts.

In conclusion, I can say that there is nothing like hard mathematical concept. It is the way you approach mathematical problems that will determine if you will solve them correctly or not. Failing to arrive to answer does not mean you are a failure. All you need is a positive attitude and you will be a great mathematician.
